Thursday Thought: Successful Shark Week

Posted By Elaine Owen, Sep 15, 2016

The King Hall Negotiations Team will host our annual “Shark Week” from September 12th through September 16th, providing the opportunity for students and alumni to learn more about the application of negotiation tactics in a wide variety of professions. This year we were fortunate to have talented speakers who are widely recognized as among the top of their fields, they provided us with plenty to think about:

On Monday, Brendon Ishikawa, a specialist in appellate mediation, spoke on how mediation can help reach result that are ‘Better Than Fair & Equal.’ He was a very engaging speaker who got students involved in demonstration, and mediated one student's dispute with a former roommate over the gas bill!

On Tuesday, Jeff Dorso, a Managing Partner at the Pioneer Law Group, discussed how he helped negotiate pertinent issues surrounding the Downtown Sacramento Kings Arena. His insight into high stakes negotiations! was highly valued.

On Wednesday Rob Christopher, founder and CEO of JustResolve, a company devoted to advancing alternative dispute resolution, discussed the "justice gap" and how 'ADR can create  "creative justice." His passion and helpful overview of many ADR forms were greatly appreciated.

On Thursday we had an Employment Law negotiations panel with Kim Lucia (Associate at Boutin Jones) and Michael Sweeney (Senior Campus Counsel, UC Davis). We learned employment and labor disputes can be amongst the most heated in the modern legal field, but also the most susceptible to negotiated resolutions.

Tomorrow with by the final talk by Prof. Shestowsky and will discuss negotation strategies for the upcoming 1L competition. We hope to see many of the IL class there!!

Thank you again to all the many speakers and team members who made this week a success!!!
