King Hall Negotiations Team 5th Annual Intra-school Negotiations Competition Winners

Dear Colleagues and Friends:

On October 1st, the King Hall Negotiations Team hosted the fifth annual Intra-school Negotiations Competition. The competition, held at King Hall, hosted 41 judges from across the state (including superior court judges, lawyers, mediators, business professionals and professors) and 76 student competitors (all King Hall students).

Students competed, in teams of two, in two rounds of negotiations.  In each round, students negotiated a different legal problem and were evaluated by either two or three competition judges.  This year’s topic, provided by the American Bar Association, was real estate.  After the two rounds, the top six teams were announced and they competed in the afternoon.

These three teams have earned the opportunity to represent King Hall at the American Bar Association's Negotiations Competition, to be held at the Santa Clara School of Law in November. 

I would like to extend my gratitude to the judges who spent their Saturday with us and provided substantial feedback to our students, making this a very valuable educational experience. 

I would also like to commend the King Hall Negotiations Team for their exceptional organizational skills and enthusiasm, without which this event would not have been a success.  Under the leadership of President Jesse Suarez ’12 and Competitions Chair Ryan Norman ’12, the Negotiations Board planned and executed the biggest competition the organization has seen to-date.  Special recognition should also be given to Kara DiBiasio ’13, Kristin Charbonnier ’13, Jasmine Tzeng ’13, Leah White ’13 and Saba Shatara ‘13 for their diligent commitment to the organization of the competition. Our student competitors were readied through the efforts of KHNT’s Seminar Committee, led by Melanie Young ’13, Allison Sloan ’12, and Pearl Kan ’13. 

Importantly, I would like to thank the Dean’s Office and Dean Tally for their generous financial support, and Dean Kevin Johnson for greeting our guests on the morning of the event.  And a special thanks to my wonderful King Hall colleagues who came to provide feedback to our students: Evelyn Lewis, John Patrick Hunt, Beth Greenwood, Chris Ide-Don, Martin Carr, Elisabeth McKechnie, and Clay Tanaka.
