Shark Week 2015

The King Hall Negotiations Team hosted our annual “Shark Week” from September 14th through September 18th, providing informational and educational opportunities for students at UC Davis School of Law to learn more about the application of negotiation tactics in a wide variety of professions.  This year we were fortunate to have very talented speakers who are widely recognized as among the top of their fields, and had record turnout for these fantastic events.

On Monday, Eric Kastner, Managing Principal of Kastner Kim LLP (Silicon Valley) gave on talk on Protecting Innovation, Creative Works, and More with Negotiations. Mr. Kastner discussed how intellectual property includes inventions, creative works, and even brand names. He went on to discuss the use of negotiations in securing favorable employment agreements for high-level employees who may own intellectual property.

On Tuesday, Andrew Greenwell, CEO and principal at Venture Sotheby’s International Realty based in Pleasanton and star of Bravo’s “Million Dollar Listing San Francisco,” shared his insights on how every generation is wired differently and communicates in different ways. Greenwell explained how to strategically negotiate with a variety of generations from Baby Boomers to Generation Y. We had a record turn-out for his talk, filling the largest lecture hall and the overflow room where a simulcast of the lecture was shown. By our count, his talk also doubled the school record for alumni attendance at a lunch time event. A lunch reception followed at the Gunrock pub on campus, which was also well attended.

On Wednesday, Jason H. Jasmine, Founding Partner at Messing Adam & Jasmine LLP (Sacramento), discussed his experience using negotiation strategies to resolve labor disputes and disciplinary matters for public sector employee associations. He  also discussed proper negotiation etiquette and other important skills.

The Thursday event was led by Suzanne Miller, Director of Global and NA Commercial Sales Legal Group at Hewlett-Packard Company. Ms. Miller discussed how people like to negotiate to increase their satisfaction and feel like they obtained a good price. She discussed how technology can reduce legal and negotiation costs while keeping customer satisfaction high and improving the deal’s speed and risk profiles.

"Shark Week" concluded on Friday with faculty advisor Professor Donna Shestowsky leading a workshop on How to Succeed in Negotiations Competitions. Largely targeted to 1Ls interested in competing in the 4th Annual 1L Negotiations Competition on September 26th, KHNT members assisted by giving  a live demo of  a negotiations competition round.

Many thanks to all the fantastic speakers as well as the members of the faculty, the student body, and the alumni who attend the events.  We hope "Shark Week" was a rewarding and educational experience for everyone involved.  Please see the Photo Gallery and the team Facebook page for more photos.
