2018 Shark Week Recap

Last week, King Hall Negotiations Team held their speaker series known as “Shark Week.” Held every day during the lunch hour, Shark Week features notable speakers who come to discuss various topics related to negotiations. KHNT was appreciative of the speakers for giving their time through their participation in the talks and panels.

On Monday, Brendon Ishikawa, certified as a specialist in appellate law by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization, led a discussion focused on the importance of empathy in negotiations. Mr. Ishikawa served as counsel in more than 100 appeals and writ proceedings in his prior practice. Mr. Ishikawa invited a student to participate in a demonstration of how to bring empathy into negotiations. This talk was on everyone’s mind past Monday as the role empathy plays in negotiations was discussed throughout the rest of the week at KHNT’s other Shark Week events.

On Tuesday, KHNT hosted a three-member panel focused on negotiating in private practice featuring Todd Camp, Derek Blazensky, and Luke Garcia. Todd Camp is Head of Coaching at Camp Negotiation Institute. He is the creator of cutting-edge negotiation preparation and execution tools which deliver a decisive advantage in any environment. Derek Blazensky is a partner of Mr. Camp's from the Camp Negotiation Institute. Luke Garcia is a King Hall alumnus who focused his studies on negotiation and alternative dispute resolution. Each speaker brought their own personal perspective on the strategies they employ with their clients and opposing counsels.

On Wednesday, KHNT hosted another panel focused on the role negotiations has in the restorative justice arena. The panel featured Professor Frampton, Supervising Deputy District Attorney Christopher Bulkeley and Chief Deputy Public Defender Allison Zuvela. Before the panel, there was an introduction led by District Attorney Bulkeley about the Neighborhood Court system. After that introduction, each panelist spoke about how negotiations typically come in to play in the restorative justice sphere.

On Thursday, Sacramento Superior Court Judge Russell Hom led a discussion about his take on negotiations from the bench. This talk was a great opportunity in which students were able to gain a unique perspective of not only a judge, but a former prosecutor and defender as Judge Hom had experience with both prior to sitting on the bench.

To close out our Shark Week on Friday, we had KHNT’s own Faculty Advisor, Professor Shestowsky lead the 1L Competition Orientation. First year participants learned about how negotiations would work in a competition setting, strategies to employ, and general tips in preparation for the competition.

We look forward to seeing the first-year participants this Saturday, September 29, 2018!
