Winter Weather

Posted By Kelsey Blegen, Mar 20, 2012

Before this adventure began I never thought I would see so much snow in the desert. We had planned to arrive in Window Rock, Arizona, on the Navajo Reservation, last night (Sunday) after spending a night in Las Vegas. We were supposed to start our volunteer training with DNA People’s Legal Services today. However, the weather and the Arizona Department of Transportation had different plans for us. Instead of crossing the width of Northern Arizona on Sunday, we spent it in Kingman, Arizona waiting for I-40 to reopen after a severe winter storm that closed 180 miles of I-40. Today (Monday) we decided to go for it and made the trek despite warnings of road closures and more winter weather. We were pleasantly surprised with a beautiful drive full of breathtaking views of red rock sprinkled with sparkly-white snow.

Around 6 p.m. mountain time we arrived in Window Rock. We are spending the night at the Quality Inn which has been a very comfortable and relaxing experience. We all had dinner at the Diné Restaurant at the hotel and ate some Navajo dishes. I had a Navajo Taco- fry bread with ground beef, beans, cheese, lettuce, red chili, and tomatoes. It was delicious and I had some Navajo tea (which was so good I bought a package of it at the gift shop). Now it’s time to get some rest before our first day of work. Three of us will be traveling on to Crownpoint, New Mexico to provide Voluntary Income Tax Assistance, four of us will be doing the same at Window Rock, and the rest will be providing general legal assistance at the Window Rock DNA office.  Later in the week some of us will be heading to different DNA offices. There is more to come on that later. We are looking forward to a great week!
