Starting a New Organization or Reactivating an Existing Organization

  1. Prepare a description and a list of your organization's goals. Brainstorm events you would like to organize throughout the academic year, and ideas for recruiting members and fundraising. Also, be sure to come up with a title if it is a new organization.

  2. If applicable, consider contacting a professor with expertise in your area to serve as a faculty liaison.

  3. Email a proposal including a brief description of your group, its goals for the year, and the names of its principal officers to the LSA Vice President Alice Park (aiwpark@ucdavis.edu). At the next LSA meeting, the LSA Board will put your proposal to a vote.

  4. Once you have the LSA Board's approval, you can begin recruiting members via emails, fliers on bulletin boards, a table at King Hall Open Houses.

    After LSA Approval:
  5. At your first group meeting, elect/appoint five officers (President (required), Treasurer (required), +3). Keep track of the number of members of your group (ideally on Google Sheets). It can also be helpful to prepare a tentative calendar of events and budget for the academic year, as needed.

  6. Register your organization with the UC Davis Center for Student Involvement (CSI) through their AggieLife system (https://orgsync.com/login/ucdavis). For further instructions, see the "Registering Active Student Organizations" tab on this site. Any questions about AggieLife should be directed to CSI staffer Joseph Martinez (jammartinez@ucdavis.edu).

  7. You can also consider putting together a website. Student website support can be obtained through the Law School IT office in room 1270F. Benjamin Bixby, the Law School Web Developer, will provide assistance to student groups wishing to have a web presence. Requests for assistance can be directed to webmaster@law.ucdavis.edu.

  8. Craft a description of your organization to be posted on the Student Organizations page of the UC Davis School of Law website: http://students.law.ucdavis.edu. Email this description, along with the name of your student organization, to webmaster@law.ucdavis.edu.

  9. Create a group listserv with an @ucdavis.edu domain name using the SYMPA Listserv System.

  10. After the first meeting, email full names and UC Davis email addresses of one or two of the organization's contacts to the LSA VP Alice Park (aiwpark@ucdavis.edu) to be added to the Student Organization Leadership Directory

  11. For Funding and Accounting Information, contact LSA Treasurer Mina Arasteh (marasteh@ucdavis.edu or davislsatreasurer@gmail.com). Also Read through the "Student Organization Event Contacts & Resources" guide.

  12. To post group announcements and messages on the LSA website and to add your group to the list of student organizations on this page, email LSA VP Alice Park (aiwpark@ucdavis.edu).
