Alex moved to California from New York City to attend law school, where she is interested in studying issues at the intersection of law, human rights, and feminism. She was an English major at NYU, where she authored a research paper about the 2015 marriage equality referendum in Ireland. Alex proudly joined the KHWLA board to continue building a community of individuals at King Hall who are passionate about women’s rights and committed to being fierce advocates for gender equality.

Shayla worked as a project manager for a media and framing project in the Political Science Department. Prior to that, she worked as a research assistant on various political science and public opinion projects that studied President Trump and the European response to the 2016 election. During college, she worked as an intern for the Hillary Clinton campaign.

Sydney graduated from California State University, Sacramento in 2017 with a major in public relations and a minor in political science. While she has many passions, women’s rights and issues have always been at the forefront. Through King Hall Women’s Law Association, Sydney hopes to combat gender discrimination, promote reproductive justice, and embrace her true femininity. When she is not studying or fundraising, Sydney enjoys swimming, gardening, musical theatre, and managing her non-profit organization The Pink Mermaid Project.

Emily graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a degree in Global Studies, where she focused her studies on Latin America and women's issues. After graduating, she worked as a Legal Assistant for nearly two years at a private civil litigation firm. However, before transferring to USCB, Emily helped organize events regarding women's issues at her community college in Sacramento, where she developed a strong passion for advocating for women's rights. She plans to carry this passion throughout her legal education. Along with her involvement with KHWLA, Emily is a Research Editor for the Journal of Juvenile Law and Policy.

Desirée graduated from UC Davis with a degree in Sociology in 2018. She has contributed to published research concerning the workplace experiences of LGB individuals, and most recently completed research exploring the incarceration experiences of women in California. In addition to her work with KHWLA, she is a 1L representative for the Cannabis Law Society and serves as a research editor for the Journal of Juvenile Law & Policy (JJLP). In her free time, Desirée enjoys playing music, hiking, and board games.

Corrina graduated from the University of California, San Diego in 2017 with a major in Political Theory and a minor in English Literature. During undergrad, Corrina was on the Board of a UCSD pre-law organization, and also volunteered at a San Diego Self-Help Center. During her gap year, she took on a fellowship position at a Bay Area Self-Help Center, assisting a high volume of underreprensented and indigent folks with family law issues. Corrina is very excited to be joining the Board of the KHLWA because she is passionate about supporting women and actively promoting intersectional feminist policies.

Jennifer Umberg, Class of 2022

Jennifer worked in the international development and human rights fields prior to law school. Highlights from her career so far include serving as a Princeton in Africa Fellow with the UN World Food Programme in South Africa, adjudicating asylum claims with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Thailand, and serving as a case advisor with Asylum Access in Malaysia. Jennifer has a bachelor’s degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from UC Berkeley and a master’s degree in Human Rights from Columbia University. She likes dancing, Lily Tomlin, and Beyoncé.

Vannalee graduated from UC Davis in 2019 with a degree in Political Science and Spanish. She previously worked as a retention coordinator for the Filipinx American community and strived for womxn's empowerment through her leadership in IGNITE, a national organization that encourages young womxn to pursue elected office and male-dominated professions. Vannalee is a founding member of Pilipinx in Business and Law at UC Davis, aiming to bridge the gap between undergrad and graduate school for her underserved community. She is now a part of the Gender and Name Change Clinic at King Hall. Vannalee is super excited to continue her passion for inclusivity and community building through WLA!
