Information on the November 5th MPRE

Posted By Rabia Paracha, Sep 19, 2011

September 20th, is the DEADLINE to register to take the November 5th MPRE exam!

The following is all the information you need to know.

What is the MPRE?

The MPRE is the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam and you are required to take this exam in every state in the US to become a licensed attorney (except Washington, Wisconsin, or Maryland).  The majority of these states allow you to take the MPRE exam while you are a 2L or 3L in order to get it out of the way before you take the bar exam.  The MPRE is a separate exam from the bar exam and both are required to become a licensed attorney in all the states except the three listed above.

When is the MPRE offered?

The MPRE exam is offered three times a year in March, August, and November.  The upcoming exam is on Saturday November 5th, 2011. Most states allow you to take the MPRE up to a year or even two before you take the bar exam (check your bar examiner’s website for more details).

What is the structure of the MPRE exam?

The MPRE is a 60 question multiple-choice exam.  You have two hours and five minutes to complete the exam.  The subject matter for the test revolves around the topics of legal ethics/professional responsibility.

How do I sign up to take the MPRE exam?

To register for the November exam visit  The fee for taking the exam is $63 if you register by the regular deadline of September 20, 2011 or $126 for the late deadline (Thursday, October 6).

What if I haven’t taken the Professional Responsibility/Ethics class yet?

It’s okay if you haven’t taken the ethics course offered at King Hall; it is not required to sign up and take the MPRE exam, though some students find that it helps.  The materials that the various Bar Review programs provide you with are more than enough for you to prepare and pass the MPRE exam.

How will the King Hall Academic Success Program help me prepare for the MPRE Exam?

To help you prepare for MPRE, ASP will hold workshops in the Fall (Wednesday, October 26 and Friday, October 28).  The workshops will include practice MPRE questions and screenings of a MPRE preparation video lecture.

How else should I prepare for the MPRE Exam?

Kaplan has generously agreed to provide King Hall students with a free MPRE online course provided by Kaplan Bar Review!  To register just go to and you will get instant access to a 4-hour MPRE lecture, 175 question MPRE question bank, two full practice tests, and more!  You can also download the free book off the Kaplan site or sign up for a free copy with me here.
