Meet the 2022-2023 Board: Fall Competition Problem Writers

Please welcome our 2022-2023 Fall Competition Problem Writing Chairs, Michael Gates and Christine Hanon!

Michael Gates

Michael loves the competitive nature of the process of appellate advocacy. He is excited to get to know this year’s appellate advocacy class and watch them improve their skills each week. In addition to MCHB, Michael serves as the President of the Federalist Society at King Hall. Last summer, Michael worked at Allen Matkins, primarily on business litigation matters.

Michael is from Huntington Beach, CA. He received his degrees in Philosophy, Politics, and Law from USC. His favorite hobbies include anything involving sports and hanging out with friends and family. Fund fact: when Michael was 12 years old, he played in two Little League baseball games that were broadcasted on ESPN!

Christine Hanon

This fall is Christine’s last semester of classes! Christine will be working for a federal judge full-time next spring, and she’s so excited to soak in her last few months as a student. Christine loves a good, hot bench in appellate advocacy because it gives her a chance to test her knowledge in the fire. Outside of MCHB, Christine is on Law Review and participates in the Civil Rights Clinic. Last summer, Christine worked for the Department of Defense, Office of General Counsel at the Pentagon, assisting attorneys on the Privacy Act and FOIA litigation.

Christine is from Covington, WA. She has her Bachelors in Journalism and in Music Performance (Flute) from Washington State University, as well as her Masters in Newspaper, Magazine, and Online Journalism from Syracuse University. Christine loves trail running with her catahoula leopard dog, Griffin, and weight lifting! Fun fact: Christine co-owns and helps her run her family’s winery, Ragaire Cellars in Walla Walla, Washington!
