A Great Dr. Ives Tournament for a Great Cause
From the UC Davis School of Law News & Events Page
More than 100 students, staff, faculty, alumni, and friends of UC Davis School of Law participated in the 32nd Annual Dr. Ives Basketball Tournament on Sunday, January 31, a fundraiser for the King Hall Legal Foundation (KHLF).
For the third year in a row, the Tanakaholics emerged as the tournament champions. In the thrilling final game, the Tanakaholics defeated Team Briscoe 45-35.
The morning began with each of the 13 teams playing two games to determine their seed positions for the single elimination tournament in the afternoon. The Tanakaholics were seeded first, and team Learned Hand was seeded second.
This year's event saw the inaugural Knock Out Tournament. Elisa Cozad ‘11 edged out Brittany Cheney ‘12 to win the women's division. Joseph Tang '12 defeated Michael Sapira '10 to take the men's division. Professor Peter Lee beat out Academic Success Director Emily Randon to become the faculty Knock Out champion.
Other faculty present included Dean Kevin R. Johnson, Professor Anupam Chander, Professor Lisa Pruitt, Professor Clay Tanaka, Professor Rachana Shah, and Clinic Staff Attorneys Holly Cooper and Carter "Cappy" White.
KHLF would like to extend special thanks to King Hall Alumni Board President Steve Boutin '72, who rooted on Team Boutin and was a generous event sponsor; Marc Fernandez '07, who organized a donation from Morrison & Foerster, where he is an associate; and Nathan McGuire '04, an associate with Neumiller & Beardslee, who organized a donation from his firm. Thanks were also due to Sonny Lo '77, a former LSA president and Administrative Law Judge who volunteered as referee, and Nicole Ocampo '11 for volunteering her photography skills to document the memorable tournament.
Photos of the event can be viewed on the Law School's Flickr page.
The Dr. Ives Basketball Tournament is named for Eric Iverson '79, who, according to Law School legend, jumped over three defenders to toss in a spectacular scoop shot at the buzzer to win the first tournament's championship game. The annual competition has become a King Hall tradition. Iverson's team, Learned Hand, has participated in every Dr. Ives tournament since 1978.
