King Hall Negotiations Team Places Third at ABA Regional Negotiation Competition

Posted By , Nov 14, 2011

On November 5-6, 2011, the King Hall Negotiations Team (KHNT) sent three teams to compete in the ABA Regional Negotiations Competition. All three teams placed in the top 10 out of 28 competing teams from around the region (which encompasses the ninth circuit) and the school is extremely proud of their performance.

With only ten weeks of law school under their belt, Kyle Junginger ’14 & Sean Newland ’14 placed 3rd overall and had the top overall score coming in to the final round. Alexander Rich ’13 & Shannon Thompson ’13 nearly qualified for the final round, placing 7th overall. Jesse Suarez ’12 & Uzair Saleem ’13 placed 10th.

This year, the ABA Regional Negotiations Competition was held at Santa Clara University School of Law. Students competed, in teams of two, in two rounds of preliminary negotiations. In each round, students negotiated a different legal problem and were evaluated by panels of four or five competition judges. This year’s topic, provided by the American Bar Association, was real estate law. The negotiations involved the sale of a luxury home, pre-litigation settlement of nuisance claims, and the settlement of a significant personal injury suffered on the property. After the two rounds, the top four teams were announced and they competed in the final round the next day.

The King Hall Negotiations Board and the competing teams would like to extend their gratitude to Professor Donna Shestowsky, who dedicated a tremendous amount of time and effort advising the teams, and attended the competition to ensure the success of the competitors.

In addition, this year’s competitors would like to thank the King Hall Negotiations Board for their commitment in ensuring the success of the competitors. Special recognition should be given to board members Ryan Norman ’12, Kara DiBiasio ’13, Jasmine Tzeng ’13, Kristin Charbonnier ’13, Saba Shatara ’13, Leah White ’13, and Melanie Young ’13 for their time spent coaching and practicing with the competing teams. Special thanks are extended to alums (and former competitors) Jesse Yang ’11, who returned to King Hall to give strategic advice to the teams, and Rachel Ray ’11, who volunteered her time on the first day of the competition to assist Professor Shestowsky in supervising the teams and providing feedback. Additional thanks are owed to the many volunteers who assisted the teams by participating in brainstorming sessions and practice rounds.
Importantly, the King Hall Negotiations Team would like to thank the Dean’s Office, Dean Adam Talley, and Dean Kevin Johnson for their generous financial support.
