Announcements

NEW LSA Website Up and Running!

After many months of work, the new LSA website is live. Check it out and bookmark it: http://students.law.ucdavis.edu/lsa/index.aspx

The website contains many great new features, including the ability for any member of the King Hall community to submit events and announcements to the weekly email directly from the site by clicking on the "Submit an Event/Announcement" link. The Course Outlines section is also improved, and LSA is working to upload all of the outlines. More features will be added in the coming months, including an improved calendar system that will centralize King Hall events in one place.

LSA extends a special thank you to Jason Aller, Sam Sellers, and Ed Henn, as well as Jason Butler and Assistant Dean Adam Talley, for their support of this project. Research Assistant Position - Prof. Shestowsky

Professor Shestowsky is looking for two new research assistants who can work 8-12 hours per week starting May 2011. The positions are intended to last until the students graduate; successful candidates are expected to agree to work (part-time) for that period.

The focus of the projects will be on alternative dispute resolution and legal psychology. Tasks may require using legal and social science journal databases, and conducting phone survey interviews for a large-scale study of litigants. Training will be provided. If you wish to apply, please email your resume (including two references), transcript and a short letter of interest before February 25th.

Preference will be given to students who have taken our ADR course, have other experience in ADR, or have a background in social science (whether in psychology or some other field) or statistics.

Immigration Clinic Bond Fund Bar Review

2/24/2011 | 9:00 PM

Sophia's Thai Bar, 129 E Street (on E b/w 1st & 2nd), Davis, CA

King Hall Bar Reviewers! On Thursday, 2/24, please join us for Bar Review - Sophia's Thai Bar @ 9pm! We will be getting 20% of all proceeds from 9:00 - 11pm and 10% of all proceeds from 11 until the end of the night so COME EARLY! :) Proceeds will be contributed to the UC Davis Immigration Law Clinic Bond Fund to help release detained Immigration Law Clinic clients from ICE custody.

The Bond Fund is one of the clinic's most important resources, and it contributes greatly to the well-being of its clients. If you aren't able to join us at Sophia's but would like to help out in a some way, you can donate here: http://ilcstudentbondfund.wordpress.com/. Below is a paragraph describing the bond fund, which is managed by California Rural Legal Assistance.

Many immigrants in removal proceedings are held in jails across the United States for months or even years while they fight to stay in America. The Department of Homeland Security contracts with jails and prisons all over the country to detain immigrants, including many who are neither a danger to the community nor a flight risk. Sometimes even those who are eligible for bond stay in Immigration Detention because they are unable to come up with the often large bond sums ordered by Immigration Judges. Being held in custody while fighting a protracted legal battle is demoralizing and makes it much more difficult to fight, even where there are clear relief options. Help the Immigration Law Clinic at UC Davis maintain a fund to help detained clients fight their cases from home, instead of from behind bars. When a case is completed successfully, the bond will come back to the clinic and can be recycled for future clinic clients. This fund will enable families to stay together, and help give people the chance to fight their cases without the added constraints of incarceration.

API Week: A Generation Of Progress, "Service Friday"

2/25/2011 | 9:00am-12:00pm

If you're around campus on Friday, come find us (or we'll find you) tabling for the Bone Marrow Drive. Every year, thousands are diagnosed with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases. Many of them will die unless they get a bone marrow or cord blood transplant from a matching donor - which are rare especially amongst APIs. Absolutely no donation is required from you - just one simple, painless swab from you could save someone's life, and you'll walk away not only with that awesome feeling, but a sweet treat from us! Candy and cookies served.
