Co-Chair

Heather Zimmerman graduated with honors from UC Davis with degrees in Political Science and Communication. As an undergraduate she participated in the UCDC program, interning for then Senator Hillary Clinton and writing her program paper on female representation in the United States Congress. Prior to law school she worked for an egg donor agency in Southern California, in business development at InteKrin Therapeutics, a start-up BioPharmaceutical company in Palo Alto, and earned her Master's Degree in Public Health with an emphasis in Health Law, Bioethics and Human Rights. This past summer Heather worked for the Honorable Troy Nunley in the Eastern District of California. At King Hall, Heather is also President of the Health Law Association, Senior Articles Editor for the Business Law Journal, and Senior Sections Editor for the Journal of Juvenile Law and Policy.

Rebecca Ferguson graduated with honors from Mills College in 2011 with her B.A. in Economics. Rebecca’s experiences at Mills, a liberal arts college for women, motivated her to become involved with issues relevant to women and their advocates. After graduation, Rebecca worked as a Legal Assistant in a mid-sized civil law firm in Sacramento. At King Hall, Rebecca is an active member of KHWLA, serving as a 1L Representative before being elected as Co-Chair. Rebecca is also a member of the King Hall Budget Policy Committee. Rebecca spent the summer of 2013 at the California Attorney General’s Office in the Correctional Law Section. In her spare time, Rebecca loves to bake, read, and relax with her oversized lapdog, Roxie.

Treasurer

Erin Tanimura graduated from UC Berkeley in 2010 and became interested in women’s legal issues while working at Preschool California, an early learning advocacy organization. There, she learned how early childhood education and childcare issues disproportionately affect women and minorities. Erin served KHWLA as a Programming Co-Chair for two years before becoming Treasurer. Erin is also a member of the UC Davis Law Review, Evirons, and the Water Association of Law and Policy.

Secretary

Rebecca Freed graduated from Wesleyan University with a B.A. in Mathematical Economics and American Studies. In addition to serving as Secretary for KHWLA, Becca is currently a Senior Notes and Comments Editor for the UC Davis Law Review and the Managing Sections Editor for the UC Davis Journal for Juvenile Law & Policy. While in law school Becca has also externed for the Honorable Judge Troy Nunley at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California and the Honorable David De Alba at the Sacramento Superior Court. Becca has worked as a research assistant for Constitutional Law Professor Carlton Larson and a teaching assistant for Legal Research and Writing Professor Lawrence Green. Over this past summer, she was a summer associate at Bressler, Amery & Ross, P.C. in New York, NY where she focused on Securities Litigation. In her free time, Becca enjoys volunteering at Yolo County Animal Services, reading, and spending time at the shore.

Susan Yoon graduated from Williams College in 2010 with degrees in Biology and History. After graduating, she worked for City Year Boston, working in a fourth grade classroom and coordinating the afterschool program. During her summer, Susan externed for the Honorable Dean Pregerson at the United States District Court for the Central District of California, and worked as a law clerk at Baker, Manock and Jensen in Fresno. At King Hall, Susan is also involved in the Business Law Journal and Journal of International Law and Policy.

Sarah Glatt graduated cum laude from University of San Francisco with a Bachelors in Politics. As part of her undergraduate career, she spent a year studying abroad at the University of St Andrews. At King Hall Sarah has been involved in a number of student organizations and journals as well as the King Hall Civil Rights Clinic. Sarah has spent her summers at City of Sacramento’s City Attorney’s Office and hopes to practice public entity and local government law after law school…but first she just wants to pass the bar!

Berit Elam graduated from University of Southern California with degrees in International Relations and Gender Studies in 2010. She then taught through Teach For America for two years in San Francisco before starting law school. After her 1L year, Berit spent the summer in New Orleans working at the Capital Post-Conviction Project of Louisiana.

Emily Jeng graduated from UC Berkeley with majors in English and History. She interned at the San Francisco District Attorney's Office before coming to law school. She spent her 1L summer working for a judge at the Santa Clara County Superior Court.

Jean Jiang graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 2010, with a major in Economics. During her time in undergrad, she volunteered as a hotline counselor for victims of sexual assault and was involved in several organizations aimed at rape education. Prior to coming to law school, she worked overseas in China for two years. Currently, she is working at the Family Protection Clinic, helping victims of domestic violence with their family law concerns. Additionally, she is a board member of APALSA and NLG and a Research Editor for JILP. This past summer, she worked at the Solano Superior Court as an intern for the staff attorneys.

Professional Development Chair

Susan Kahng graduated from UC Berkeley in 2012 with a BA in History. While in law school, Ms. Kahng has been active with the Women's Law Association and the Korean American Law Students Association. She also works with the UC Davis Prison Law Clinic, counseling inmates and guiding them through legal proceedings. As part of her undergraduate career, she spent two years as a research assistant with the Emma Goldman Papers Project, assisting in the preparation of volume three of a four volume book edition. It was during these years that she became interested in women's issues. During the summer of 2012, Ms. Kahng was a judicial extern for Judge Chang at Sacramento Superior Court. In her spare time, she like to volunteer with Yolo County Animal services, by playing with dogs.

Sammy Duvvuri graduated with honors from University of California, Irvine in 2011 with her B.A. in Political Science and a minor in French. Prior to law school, Sammy worked on a Congressional Campaign and in Washington D.C with an organization called International Action where she exposed to problems in developing countries. Apart from her role as a Co-Mentorship Chair in KHWLA, Sammy is also Co-Chair of Middle Eastern South Asian Law Students Association and Secretary of International Law Students Association. Following her IL year, Sammy worked with the Santa Clara District Attorney's Office and hopes to become a prosecutor in the future. When Sammy is not studying, she is exercising or watching television.

Mentorship Co-Chair

Nishat Hossain graduated summa cum laude from the University of Rhode Island with a B.S. double major in Electrical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. During her finals years of undergrad, she delved right into the corporate world of engineering at Schneider Electric working as a quality assurance engineer. Having mastered her skills in math and science, and being a glutton for punishment, she decided to leave the world of finite objective answers to join the legal profession, a world that is anything but. During her time in undergrad she was also involved with clubs such as SWE (the society of women engineers) and is no stranger to the struggles women face in their efforts to get equal recognition in male dominated careers. This past summer, Nishat worked in patent prosecution at Park, Vaughan Fleming & Dowler. She is currently a continuing her prosecution work with an eye on patent litigation for next summer. Nishat is a board member of both KHWLA and KHIPLA and hopes to continue working with the wonderful members of both associations.

Reproductive Justice Chair

Before attending law school Roxanne worked as a Program Development Consultant for the California Department of Public Health’s Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Division. Specifically, her work focused on primary and secondary teen pregnancy prevention program development and evaluation. Prior to this, Roxanne worked for Planned Parenthood in various capacities including: Program Coordinator, Marketing Assistant, Health Services Specialist, and Medical Services Representative. She also spent a year living abroad in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and interned for a Brazilian nonprofit organization that provides health education, case management, and support services to pregnant and parenting teens in Rio de Janeiro. Roxanne holds a B.A. in Politics from the University of California, Santa Cruz and Master of Public Health (MPH) with an emphasis in Maternal and Child Health from the University of California, Davis. Her professional interests include public health law, reproductive rights, and health and human rights.

Hope Alley graduated from Wesleyan University in 2011. She graduated with honors in Anthropology and Feminist, Gender and Sexuality Studies. In her junior year, Hope studied and researched aboard in northern India. During her senior year she used interviews collected in India to complete a ethnographic study of women’s leadership in the Panchayat Raj, local governments of rural India. In the study she paralleled a woman’s work as a leader and public servant with her role as a “submissive” wife, mother and daughter-in-law, this research shows that service of any type is a often a significant means for self determination. After graduation, Hope interned with the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado. During her internship she was able to aid staff attorneys in addressing conditions of confinement for prison populations throughout Colorado. The internship inspired her to apply to law school. She hopes to work with criminal defense and civil rights. She is particularly interested in reproductive justice, prison reform and sentence reform.

Abby Wolf graduated from UC Berkeley in 2011 with a degree in History. Afterwards she worked as a case assistant/paralegal in San Francisco in the litigation department of a large, international law firm. Outside of law school, she likes modern art, reading for pleasure, and her pet rabbit, Ralphie. Abby is especially interested in creating equal opportunity for women in the workplace and (in the world!).

Faculty Advisor

Professor Lisa Pruitt's career spans the globe, literally and figuratively. Before joining the UC Davis law faculty in 1999, she worked abroad for almost a decade in settings ranging from international organizations to private practice. Professor Pruitt worked with lawyers in more than 30 countries, negotiating cultural conflicts in several arenas. It is not surprising that a common theme of her research interests is how law and legal institutions manage and respond to cultural difference and cultural change.
