Welcome

The Humanitarian Aid Legal Organization (HALO) is a group of law students dedicated to service their communities through public interest lawyering and free legal aid to underserved communities. Throughout the semester, HALO organizes opportunities for law students to volunteer their time with organizations and communities in need. 

Past Projects

In 2017, we teamed up with Nashville, Tennessee based Justice for Our Neighbors.  JFON works on immigration issues, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), U-Visas, and temporary protected status.   

In 2016, we sent a team to New Orleans, Louisiana to work with Southeast Louisiana Legal Services. At SLLS we assisted attorneys by researching a variety of matters ranging from domestic violence to landlord tenant law.

In 2013, we teamed up with the Mississippi Center for Justice and sent twenty students to Biloxi, MS to help support communities devastated by Hurricane Katrina, The BP Oil Crisis, and the economic downturn. 

In 2012, we sent two separate teams to St. George, Utah and Window Rock, Arizona. In St. George, Utah, seven HALO volunteers worked with Utah Legal Services (ULS), an organization that provides free legal assistance to low income individuals involved in family law disputes.Ten student volunteers spent their spring break working with DNA People’s Legal Services,a legal services non-profit devoted to assisting low-income Native Americans in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.

In 2011, we returned to Biloxi and partnered with the Mississippi Center for Justice.

In 2010, we partnered with the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland to send twenty-five law students to staff legal clinics in community centers throughout Cleveland, Ohio. Learn more.

In 2009, we struck out on our own, and sent seventeen law students to the chronically underserved city of East St. Louis, Illinois, where we provided legal aid and did other volunteer work. Learn more.

In 2008, we again partnered with the Student Hurricane Network and sent twenty-two law students to Biloxi, Mississippi. Learn more.

In 2007, we partnered with the Student Hurricane Network to send eleven law students to New Orleans, Louisiana to provide legal assistance to victims of Hurricane Katrina and Rita. Learn more.
