Grant Letter

February 7, 2011

The Asian Pacific Islander American (API) community continues to suffer from a lack of linguistically and culturally appropriate legal services. Insufficient awareness, underrepresentation of API’s in the legal profession and a scarcity of opportunities to engage in the specific legal needs of the API community all contribute to this longstanding issue.

To combat this problem, the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA) at the UC Davis School of Law has established the Asian Pacific Islander Public Interest Grant (“API Public Interest Grant”). The grant funds King Hall students who seek to serve the legal needs of the API community. This past summer, an API Public Interest Grant recipient used the support to initiate a culturally sensitive clinic for immigrant victims of domestic violence. Another recipient conducted important policy work regarding S-Comm, a controversial immigration enforcement program. Please see the attached testimonies for more details about their amazing experiences.

We kindly request your donation, which will continue to fund fellowships for first- and second-year law students who work as summer legal interns with public interest organizations and other public interest projects that benefit the unique needs of Asian Pacific Americans.

In return for your support, you will be honored during API Week in Spring semester of 2011 and recognized on our website and community materials. API Week at King Hall explores the cultural, economic and legal issues facing the API community and is well attended by alumni, professors, students and members of the API community.

If you would like to support the grant, please write a check payable to “UCD Asian Pacific American Law” and include “API Public Interest Grant” on the memo line. If you would like to make your donation tax-deductible, please make the check payable to “UC Regents. Please send checks in the enclosed envelope to:
