The ACLU at UC Davis Ghoul of Law will be hosting a Culture Week replete with amazing speakers and ending with a spooooky bar review at Little Prague Thursday Night. Criminal Immigration and Reform Monday, October 28th Noon Room 2304 Professor Holly Cooper of the Immigration Law Clinic will discuss the intersection of criminal and immigration law. Criminal defense counsel has a duty to advise defendants of the immigration consequences of criminal convictions, but the law in this field is increasingly complex, often compounding defense counsel’s Sixth Amendment obligations. Moreover, criminal convictions can often lead to deportation of noncitizens and prolonged detention in immigration custody if the individual wants to mount an immigration defense. Recent California state laws, such as the Trust Act, however, may make it more difficult for ICE to apprehend noncitizens in criminal custody. While California leads the way in undermining devastating federal laws, Congressional reform efforts are stalled – and even if passed, could signify more negative consequences for noncitizens with criminal records. Zia’s Delicatessen sandwiches will be served. Sponsored by ACLU at King Hall Genetic Privacy and Law Enforcement Tuesday, October 29th Noon Room 1301 Professor Elizabeth Joh will discuss Maryland v.
